Cayden Carter took charge at the drop of the green and was never seriously challenged on his way to the winner's circle in IMCA Modified action Friday night at Marshalltown Speedway.
From his pole position start, Carter put his #10C into the top spot at the drop of the green while Zach Rawlins and Kyle Brown pursued. The leaders ran in that order until the race's only stoppage came after the completion of the first lap.
The early yellow was displayed when Richie Gustin and Luke Wanninger stopped in the middle of turns one and two. The caution was extended when Gustin got out of his car, walked over to Wanninger's ride and attempted to extract the driver from his car. Track personnel quickly restored order, however both machines were unable to continue.
Although I didn't see the contact that sent Gustin spinning, the passenger side of his car, at the very least, was left with significant sheet metal damage before Wanninger came upon his sideways ride. With multiple cars battling for position at the time, it appeared Gustin was mistakenly under the impression that it was Wanninger who carelessly trucked through the pack to leave his #19G looking like a mangled patio set in the clearance section of Crate and Barrel.
When racing resumed, Carter took to the high side and drove away from an exciting battle for the runner-up spot. Brown worked the top side while Jimmy Gustin and Jon Snyder ran low. Gustin kept pace with Brown and eventually made his way into second just past the midway point of the 20-lapper. By that time, however, Carter extended his advantage to a near-straightaway margin.
With Carter comfortably out front and Gustin in second, Brown went to work on the low side with Snyder and Adam Larson in pursuit. Carter held serve for the remainder of the event to take the impressive win with Gustin a straightaway behind in second. Kyle Brown went back to the top side and held off Jon Snyder for third. Larson was a close fifth.
Jay Schmidt inherited the pole position of the 18-lap IMCA Stock Car feature when Nate Thelen scratched from the event. Schmidt took advantage of his good fortune by leading the first two laps while Tracy Gienger and Michael Jaenette gave chase.
Gienger worked the low side past Schmidt in turn two on the second lap to take charge until caution slowed action on lap five. By that time, fifth row starting Steve Meyer worked his way into the top four and positioned himself to challenge.
On the restart, Meyer went to work on the top side and made his way around Jaenette for third and then was poised to challenge Schmidt for second when the caution flag waved again on lap nine. The top three ran in the same formation until Schmidt got sideways to bring out a final yellow with four laps to go.
When racing resumed a final time, Meyer again went to work upstairs. He kept the leader within his sights, however Meyer was unable to make the pass as Gienger drove to the win. Meyer ran second ahead of Jaenette, Jeff Wollam and Eric Knutson.
Jamie Duinink paced the 18-lap IMCA Northern SportMod feature for the first four circuits. Duinink showed the way while third row starting Ty Luellen raced the low groove into contention. Luellen drove the bottom side past Duinink just before the yellow flag waved on lap six.
Luellen survived three more mid-race cautions while Jenae Gustin and Ben Kates battled for second. Gustin raced the top side around Kates for good at the nine lap mark, however Luellen was too strong out front as he drove to the win by a strtaightaway. Gustin ran second ahead of Kates, Eric Elliott and Joel Rust.
Brandon Pruitt led the entire 12-lap distance to score the win in the IMCA Hobby Stock division. Pruitt built his lead to over half of a straightaway by the time he encountered lapped traffic on the eighth circuit. Bill Bonnett closed the gap late, but came up a couple car-lengths short at the line to finish second. Brice Udelhoven, Eric Stanton and Austin Luellen completed the top five.
From his second row starting spot, Josh May quickly made his way into the lead of the 15-lap Mod Lite main event. Once out front, May set sail on the top side of the fast quarter-mile to take the win ahead of Mike Morrill and a hard-charging Andy Hennigar. Charlie Brown ran fourth ahead of Dusty Masolini.
Four IMCA Sport Compacts signed in for action, however only three were able to start the feature after Jim Alday rolled his machine in the heat race. He was not injured.
David Moormann led the first four times around for the eight-lap feature before Merv Chandler worked the low side into the lead just past the midway point. Chandler cruised to the win ahead of John Gill.

Saturday, it's Armed Forces/Veterans Night at Independence Motor Speedway. In honor of Armed Forces Day, all past and present service men and women will be admitted free to the grandstands by presenting their military IDs. I also received word late today that Karsyn's Krusaders will be on-hand selling shirts. It promises to be another exciting night at Indee. I hope to see you there!

Roberts, Chandler repeat at Benton County Speedway
A trio of drivers made their first visits to victory lane this season, while another pair made return trips to center stage Sunday night at Benton County Speedway. (complete results listed below)
At the start of the 15-lap IMCA Northern SportMod feature, it was front row starter Colby Heishman in control. In search of his first win in Vinton, Heishman led the field while points leaders Danny Dvorak and Nick Roberts were making their way through traffic from mid-pack starts.
Dvorak drove into second on the third lap, then Roberts followed him into third one lap later. Just as the leaders were making their way through the first set of turns on the following lap, Heishman was collected with a lapped car which resulted in a caution. Since Heishman was stopped on the track, he was sent to the tail of the pack for the ensuing restart with the points leaders left to battle for the lead.
Dvorak brought the field back to green running the low side with Roberts up top. The front-runners remained in that order until the final restart on lap 12. When racing resumed, Roberts worked the low side to keep pace with Dvorak. He shot to the inside of the leader in turns one and two where they made contact fighting for the same groove, resulting in a flat left rear on Dvorak's ride.
Dvorak attempted to keep pace with Roberts, however Roberts pulled away to take the win, his third of the season. Joel Rust made another impressive run from a fifth row start to finish second and remain the only driver in the division with top-five finishes in all five points races in Vinton this season. Dvorak limped across the line in eighth.
Roberts seems to like the odd numbered race nights as he has now won on the first, third and fifth nights of the season. His fourth Northern SportMod win all-time in weekly racing in Vinton, Roberts is now tied for 10th on that list with Frankie Dulin, Jim Buhlman and Troy Burkhart.
Nathan Chandler picked up his first win since opening night in the IMCA Sport Compact division. Chandler chased points leader Bill Whalen Jr. for a pair of laps before ducking beneath the race leader on the third circuit. He pulled away to take the win half of a straightaway ahead of Whalen.
It was the 37th victory in Vinton for the track's all-time wins leader in the division. His nine wins in the month of May are more than any other calendar month for Chandler. He has now won multiple Sport Compact features in a season for the sixth straight year. The fewest number of features Chandler has won in a single season in Vinton is four, which came in 2008, the year of his first win.
John Emerson put his #87 to the front early in the 15-lap IMCA Stock Car feature. From his second row start, Emerson worked the low side past front row starters Curtis Roster and Bob Ahrendsen by the time the field reached the flag stand to complete the first lap. Emerson drove away from the field to take his first win of the season by a straightaway ahead of Norman Chesmore.
His first win this season, Emerson now has two in his career in Vinton, making him the 21st Stock Car driver in track history with multiple wins. He ranks tied for 17th with Frankie Dulin (the same Frankie Dulin who Roberts tied on the SportMod list Sunday), Jeremy Miller (of Batavia, Iowa, and not Ben Seaver from Growing Pains), Kevin Rose (not the Internet entrepreneur) and Jason Deshaw (not the country singer). Whew.
Emerson also won the IMCA Stock Car feature Saturday night at Independence Motor Speedway. He, Dan Trimble, Justin Temeyer, Tom Schmitt, Damon Murty and Phil Holtz are the only drivers in history to sweep weekend features at the two tracks and they have done it a combined 17 times. Emerson was also the last to do it (July 7-8, 2012) and joined Trimble, Temeyer and Murty as the only four drivers to sweep the weekend multiple times. Temeyer holds the record with six weekend Stock Car sweeps at the two tracks.

From his third row start, Luloff quickly raced into the top three, then worked around the outside of Patrick Flannagan for second on lap three. One lap later, Luloff used the same line to sneak by Banks before pulling away to the convincing win.
His first win of the season, Luloff has now won at least one Modified feature in six of the last seven years in Vinton. It was his third during the month of May. All-time, Luloff has earned 15 Modified wins in weekly racing history in Vinton, placing him seventh on that list. He currently sits one shy of Vern Jackson for sixth.
Luloff also became the fifth different Modified winner in the first five points races of the season. That mark ties 1980, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2001 as the second-most consecutive winners to start a season. Vern Jackson and Scott Hogan are among the list of others who have made multiple trips to Vinton this season, but have yet to break through to victory lane in 2013. Chipp gets first IMCA Northern SportMod win in Independence
One first-time victor and a pair of back-to-back winners highlighted action Saturday night at Independence Motor Speedway.
Brennen Chipp added his name to the track's storied list of feature winners Saturday night as he picked up his first win on the Independence oval in the IMCA Northern SportMod division. Carter collects Hawkeye Dirt Tour win at Benton County Speedway
Although pressured late by J.D. Auringer, second-year IMCA Modified driver Cayden Carter held on to score the win in the season opener for the Karl Performance Hawkeye Dirt Tour at Benton County Speedway Tuesday night. (Complete results follow.)
Carter, who started outside of Patrick Flannagan on the front row of the 27-car field, took the lead at the drop of the green. He paced the field while Flannagan, Scott Hogan, Richie Gustin and Jimmy Gustin jockeyed for position behind him.
A couple of early cautions bunched the field and allowed Auringer, who started 15th, to stay within striking distance. Following a mid-race stoppage that involved Richie Gustin and Flannagan, among others, Auringer took the green flag in second place on a lap 17 restart.
While the leaders remained primarily dialed in on the top side of the fast quarter-mile, Auringer made his charge to the front sharing time on the bottom of the speedway. He continued those efforts in the waning laps in attempt to challenge Carter.
Auringer pulled even with the leader numerous times over the final laps, but was unable to gain enough ground on the bottom and settled in behind the leader. Carter raced to his first career HDT series win in the 30-lapper and Hogan made his way around Auringer late to steal second
In other action, IMCA sacntioned SportMods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts were also on the schedule. All three of those divisions raced for state, regional and national points, however track points were not awarded.
Brennen Chipp led the 15-lap IMCA Northern SportMod feature to green. From his outside front row starting spot, Chipp assumed command with Damon Murty, driving the #CH19 of Colby Heishman, in tow.
Nick Roberts, Danny Dvorak and Joel Rust entered the mix for second while Chipp maintained a few car-lengths over the field. The trio following Murty advanced when Murty drifted high in turn four with five laps to go. The scatter for position allowed Roberts to take over second and then he quickly went to work on running down Chipp.
On the 12th circuit, Roberts powered past Chipp to take command, then led to the checkers to take the win, his third in Vinton this season. Dvorak ran second ahead of Jenae Gustin, who made an impressive run to third after starting in the sixth row.
Benji Irvine made his way around Kyle Parizek seven laps into the 15-lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature when Parizek suffered a right rear flat on his #17K. Irvine then pulled away and appeared to be on his way to an easy victory when he slipped off the high side of turn four with only a couple of laps to go.
Irvine, who built a straightaway lead before that mishap, was able to pop back onto the speedway and hold the lead by a couple of car-lengths ahead of Nathan Ballard. Although Ballard pressured the leader in the final moments, Irvine drove to the win.
Tyler Whalen led all 10 laps to score his first win of the season in the IMCA Sport Compact division, his first-ever in Vinton. Whalen held off heavy pressure from his father, Bill Whalen Jr., and Merv Chandler to earn the victory. Chandler edged the elder Whalen at the line to take second.
It was a great night of racing in Vinton that ended just before 10 p.m. It was a pleasure to call the action with Jerry Vansickel. Milestone wins highlight exciting night at Benton County Speedway
A trio of drivers earned very memorable wins Sunday night at Benton County Speedway. Two of them earned their first career wins in their respective divisions and the third made his way to victory lane during his first-ever visit to the speedway.
The first milestone win Sunday night came in the IMCA Stock Car division as Scott Pippert won a thriller with a late-race pass of division veteran Damon Murty.
Curtis Roster took the lead at the drop of the green in the 15-lapper with Bob Ahrendsen and Pippert in tow. The leaders ran three separate grooves all within a car-length of each other until caution slowed the event on lap three.
When racing resumed, Murty, who restarted fourth, joined the leaders as the top four broke away in two-wide formation two rows deep at the front of the pack. After Ahrendsen enjoyed the top spot on lap four, Murty powered to his inside one lap later to take control.
Pippert followed Murty to the front as the lead pair broke free from traffic. Enjoying a straightaway margin over the rest of the field by the midway point, Murty and Pippert battled for the lead. Pippert attempted to get a run on Murty on the low side of the quarter-mile a few times in the waning laps. He took advantage of a golden opportunity to power into the lead when Murty pushed high in turn four with three laps to go.
Caution slowed the event a short time later, however Pippert held on for his first career IMCA Stock Car win by half of a car-length over Murty. With the win, Pippert, who won 47 times in his career in the Hobby Stock division in Vinton, became the 32nd different Stock Car feature winner in weekly racing history at the speedway and also took over the unofficial points lead.
IMCA Modified veteran Troy Cordes appeared to be on his way to an easy win until former IMCA Northern SportMod and first-year IMCA Modified driver Tyler Droste closed late to score the thrilling win.
It was outside front row starter Tony Olson enjoying the early lead while Cordes raced from a third row start into second on lap three. Running the high side, Cordes made his charge to the front while Olson ran down low.
In a spectacular move, Cordes changed things up on lap seven when he came off the high side of turn two and shot to the low side of Olson. Cordes emerged with the lead, then quickly pulled away from the pack.
While Cordes extended his advantage, Droste was making his way through traffic from a sixth row starting spot. He shot to the low side of Scott Hogan for second on the 12th circuit only to find himself a straightaway behind Cordes.
With eight laps remaining, Droste remained committed to the low groove and quickly cut into the deficit. With a couple of laps remaining, Droste pulled to within a car-length, then dropped to the low side of Cordes in turns one and two just after the leaders took the flying green.
Droste took charge down the back stretch and led the remainder of the event to earn his first-ever win in an IMCA Modified. The win made Droste the 74th different Modified winner in weekly racing history in Vinton.
This season marks the 12th time in the 29 years Modifieds have raced weekly in Vinton that four different drivers won the first four features of the season. The record, which is seven straight winners to start the season, happened twice - in 1994 and 2003. Five other times have there been five different Modified winners to start the season. That happened in 1980, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2001. The last time as many as four different drivers won at the start of a season was 2006.
While he wasn't a first-time winner in his division, Andy Coffman was a first-time visitor to Benton County Speedway. His first appearance on the quarter-mile was well worth the drive from Des Moines as Coffman drove to the win in the 15-lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature.
Jacob Keiser held the early lead, but was closely pursued by Coffman and Kyle Parizek at the front of the pack. Running the top side, Coffman swept past Keiser as the leaders exited turn two on lap four. He pulled away from the pack and scored the convincing win in the division's second straight caution-free feature. Chris Luloff battled Parizek for second late in the race. Luloff was able to edge Parizek for second as they battled for position around lapped traffic.
Coffman, the second first-time Hobby Stock winner in four weeks of racing this season, became the track's 83rd different winner in the division all-time at the speedway.
Prior to Sunday night, in the division's 23-year weekly racing history in Vinton, only six times had four different Hobby Stock drivers found victory lane during the first four weeks of the season. Sunday night became the seventh time in 24 years. The record for most consecutive different Hobby Stock winners at the start of a season is five - which happened twice - in 2004 and again in 2006. That record could be tied next weekend.
The only driver at the speedway perfect in his heat race qualifiers through the first four weeks of the season, Joel Rust was looking to add his first feature win of the year in the IMCA Northern SportMod division. At the end of 15 laps, it was mission accomplished.
Mike McDonald took the early lead while Rust quickly worked his way through the field from a fifth row starting spot. Already running fourth after a first lap caution, Rust ran the low groove past race leader Kyle Olson just prior to a lap six yellow.
On the restart, Rust again showed the way while two-time winner Nick Roberts was also marching through the pack from a fifth row starting spot. Roberts settled into second following a mid-race caution, but was unable to reel in the leader as Rust drove to the impressive win.
It was Rust's second career Northern SportMod win in weekly racing history in Vinton - his first coming on May 23, 2010. He is now one of 24 SportMod drivers in track history with multiple feature wins. The win also unofficially propelled Rust into a tie with Roberts atop the division's standings. Rust is the only SportMod driver to earn top-five finishes in each of the four points races this season.
Bill Whalen Jr. was in the right place at the right time to earn his second 12-lap IMCA Sport Compact victory of the young season. Whalen took the lead on the third lap after mechanical problems sidelined Merv Chandler, then was relegated back to second when Nathan Chandler ran the low side past the leader on lap five.
Nathan Chandler pulled away and appeared to be on his way to victory when his engine let go just after he took the white flag, forcing him to an early exit. Whalen led the final time around to take the win, his second in three weeks. The ninth win of his career in Vinton, Whalen re-tied Brad Chandler for fifth on the division's all-time wins list in Vinton. The win also extended Whalen's lead atop the division's standings.
Coming up Tuesday night at the speedway is the first event of the 2013 Karl Performance Hawkeye Dirt Tour presented by XSAN. The IMCA Modified tour will compete on the Benton County quarter-mile, along with IMCA-sanctioned SportMods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts.
