Over the last couple weeks, I've been looking through my results and tried to come up with additional stats to crunch. Although a nasty bout with the flu changed my other weekend plans, I did take time to open up the Excel file late Saturday night after I felt up to speed. Since I had nothing else to do in anticipation of tomorrow's race, here are some more tidbits. The following numbers are broken down by division and, just as before, include only weekly points races. There you have the latest installment of numbers and, for those who bothered to read this far, I'll include some bonus stats. I looked back to see how trends and patterns developed through the years in each division and came across a few "changing of the guards," if you will. There were a few seasons throughout the Late Model division's history when some drivers earned the final wins of their storied Independence careers while other drivers earned their first wins that same season. Of note:
1984: Curt Martin (first win May 5), Karl Sanger (final win July 7)
1986: Greg Hunter (first win May 3), Bill Zwanziger (final win June 28)
1992: Darin Burco (first win June 6), Jim Burbridge (final win August 22)
2001: Darren Ackerman (first win June 9), Greg Hunter (final win August 4)
2002: Denny Osborn (final win July 6), Dale Stolte (first win came on August 3)
2003: Gary Crawford (finale win June 14) and Red Dralle (final win July 12), Darin Duffy (first win July 5)
Obviously, there are other years when drivers won their first and last features, however no individual season served as a milestone final win for one driver while at the same time serving as another driver's first career win among the drivers in the top-20 of the all-time wins list.
I should also note, the ties listed in the stats in this blog are not broken by any particular tie-breaker. The orders are included here as they were when I sorted them in my spreadsheet. I didn't take the extra time to set another filter when sorting the information.
One final note: While decades technically run from a year ending in "1" through a year ending in "0" (such as 1991-2000), I decided to list decades here based on "0" through "9" (such as 1990-1999) since that seems to be the way most people recognize them. I didn't want to enter that debate. Me turn down a debate? Yeah, I must not be feeling well...
If time allows and I get more creative in the coming weeks (months?) leading up to the 2010 season, I'll try to figure out more numbers to share. Before you ask, no, I don't know the deepest snow in which anyone has raced at Independence. The only race I've ever attended with substantial amounts of snow on the ground was the Cruiser special at Echo Valley Speedway a number of years back. While that was fun and unique as a one-time event, I have no desire to do it again anytime soon...
