Stats Blitz! Final numbers through 2012 for Benton County Speedway

Below is the final Stats Blitz of 2012 for Benton County Speedway. The numbers include weekly points races only and do not include the Spring Shakedown or Frostbuster specials in April, the Hawkeye Dirt Tour event in May or the Modified portion of July's Hogan Memorial. The Thursday night race during the Benton County Fair was a points race for SportMods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts. Numbers for that event are included below.

Following the numbers from this season are all-time stats for the speedway for the five divisions that competed in 2012. Keep in mind, those numbers also include weekly points races only. Special events/non-points races are not included. All changes due to accomplishments from this season are highlighted in pink text.

All photos included here are courtesy of Scott Tjabring of Action Track Photography, the official track photographer of the speedway for the past 12 years. Thanks to Scott and his wife, Donette, for their hard work and dedication to the speedway. While they are hanging up the camera to focus more time on their family, we wish them the best and hope to see them at the races from time to time!

Stuff Nobody Should Know…
* Of the 92 feature winners, 46 came from inside starting spots and 46 from outside starting spots.
* All feature winners came from the first six rows of the feature lineups and every starting position in the first six rows produced at least one winner.
* 15 of the 92 winners came from an inside fifth row starting spot. That starting position produced the most feature winners.
* Outside row six produced only one feature winner. Racer Hulin came from that starting position to win the SportMod feature on June 10. Every other starting spot in the first six rows produced no fewer than four winners.
* Of the 15 Hobby Stock winners, seven came from the fifth row. Six times, the row six winner was Scott Pippert. Chris Luloff was the other.
* No SportMod driver won a feature from the pole position. Every other division saw at least one winner come from the pole.
* In the Stock Car division, four different starting positions produced exactly three feature winners apiece (positions 1, 2, 5 and 9). The other six starting positions in the first six rows produced exactly one winner each.
* Merv Chandler earned eight second place finishes in the IMCA Sport Compacts and Scott Hogan earned five second place finishes in the IMCA Modifieds.
* 87 different drivers cracked the top-10 in his/her division’s points for at least one week this season.
* 16 different drivers held or shared their division's points lead at some point during the season.
* Scott Pippert (Hobby Stock) finished the season with 12 straight top-3 finishes. Eight of those were wins.
* Merv Chandler (Sport Compact) finished the season with 11 straight top-3 finishes.
* Jay Schmidt (Stock Car) and Scott Pippert (Hobby Stock) were the only drivers at the track to finish in the top 10 every night this season.

HIGH LOW: Paul Shepherd (31S) and Norman Chesmore (15) race for position in IMCA Stock Car action. Both drivers made trips to the winner's circle in 2012.

Stuff To Tell Your Friends That Makes Them Think You've Lost It...
* A Modified with a "1" in its number won 14 of 17 features this season. A Modified with a "1" in its number led 248 of 334 Modified feature laps.
* Over a span of nine consecutive weeks, Curt Hilmer and Rick Paulson flip-flopped or tied for the 5th and 6th positions in the SportMod standings.
* Of all drivers who raced weekly, only two did not drop in the points at any time this season. Phil Holtz (Stock Car) and Justin Wacha (Hobby Stock) either moved up or held the same spot in the standings throughout the entire season:
* Of 92 feature events, only 13 winners led those races in their entirety.
* For the first time since 2008, no Stock Car driver won more than five features.
* Every track champion in 2012 earned at least one feature win. In the five divisions that currently compete at the speedway, there have been 78 track champions crowned all-time. Of those, only two won track titles without a single trip to victory lane – Max Leonard (Hobby Stock , 1993); Steve Kesl (Hobby Stock, 2002). Interestingly, those drivers won features during other seasons, however they each earned one track title.
* 16 of 92 features went flag-to-flag without a caution. The breakdown per division: Sport Compact (9 times), Hobby Stock (4), Stock Car (2), SportMod (1), Modified (0).

THREE'S A CROWD: IMCA SportMod drivers Jesse Belez (81) and Tim Rawlins (17) battle three-wide with Jim Buhlman.

Below are the updated all-time numbers for the speedway. Along with career wins and track championships, a few other statistics are included. Please keep in mind, all numbers included are for weekly points races only. No information is included from special events/non-points races. Again, all changes due to accomplishments from the 2012 season are listed in pink.

MODIFIED (1979-1983, 1990-2012)
The Modifieds were IMCA sanctioned from 1979-1983 until the track discontinued weekly racing from 1984-1989. When the track reopened for weekly racing in 1990, the division was IMCA sanctioned that year through the 1991 season. After being unsanctioned for a nine year stretch, the Modifieds have been IMCA sanctioned since the 2001 season. Modifieds have competed weekly in 28 seasons in Vinton.

TOP MOD: Scott Hogan picked up one feature win in 2012 on the way to his track-leading eighth Modified title. Hogan is also the all-time feature wins leader in the division in Vinton with 43 trips to the winner's circle in weekly points racing.
