Cale collects second IMCA Modified win of the season at Lee County

Tyler Cale came from a fourth row start to edge Josh Foster in a classic battle, taking his second win of the season in IMCA Modified action at Lee County Speedway.

Problems for Foster led him off the track before the green flag even waved in his qualifier. Starting last among the 16 starters in the feature, Foster was a rocket and worked into the top five following a pair of stoppages on the first lap.

Wyatt Lantz held the point while Foster and Cale worked through traffic from the low groove. Foster made his way into the lead just past the midway point of the scheduled 20-lapper, with Cale following him to the front a short time later. Once they made their way to the front, the duo put on a great display of wheel-to-wheel action at the front of the pack.

First, it was Foster working the top side with Cale down low. The leaders swapped racing grooves numerous times over the final circuits, with Foster eventually settling in on the bottom and Cale to his outside. Cale swept past Foster's #77 on the final lap to emerge as the winner. Lantz held on for third ahead of Ryan Cook and Brandon Banks.

It was just another week for the IMCA Stock Cars as they, yet again, had a terrific battle out front in that 15-lapper. Front row starters Derek St. Clair and Cale Samberg were joined by John Oliver Jr. as the front-runners went three-wide in the early stages before Samberg broke free to grab the lead.

Matt Greiner, who started in the fourth row, worked into a challenge for second just prior to a lap five caution. On the restart, Greiner ran the low side past Oliver and worked to chase down Samberg. Greiner eventually made his bid for the lead working the low side of turns three and four on the white flag lap. He emerged as the leader at the start/finish line, then held on to score his second straight win. Samberg ran second ahead of Oliver, Jeff Mueller and Abe Huls.

Jim Gillenwater came from a sixth row starting spot to earn his third IMCA SportMod win of the season. Michael Joe Bliven held the early lead from his second row starting spot and maintained a few car-lengths on the field while Gillenwater raced his way into contention on the low side of the speedway.

By the 10th circuit of the 15-lapper, Gillenwater found himself in third and then saw the gap close even tighter when the caution flag waved with just two laps to go. On the restart, Gillenwater quickly made his way into second, then shot to the inside of the leader in turn two on the final lap to score the exciting win. Oliver came home second ahead of Tony Dunker, who also started in row six. Bliven faded to fourth at the line ahead of Phillip Cossel.

Darin Smith drove the high side to victory in the 12-lap IMCA Sport Compact main event. He worked his way into contention from a third row starting spot as Kimberly Abbott and Scott Smith waged a side-by-side battle for the lead.

Abbott eventually broke free to assume command while Darin Smith challenged late. He pulled even with Abbott as the flying green waved, then inched ahead by less than a car-length at the line to score his first win of the season. Scott Smith ran third ahead of Chuck Fullenkamp, who made a good run through traffic after a mid-race tire change. William Michel completed the top five.

Jake Wenig worked the low side into the lead in turn four on the first lap of the 15-lap Hobby Stock feature. Wenig then drove away from the field and survived a handful of caution periods to score his second straight win in Donnellson. Dan Wenig came home second ahead of Victor Hastings, Nathan Anders and Dane Blozovich.

Saturday night, it's back to Independence Motor Speedway for RE/MAX Independence Realty night at the races and then to Benton County Speedway on Sunday when Albert Auto sponsors the action. I hope to see you this weekend!
