Savage sails to IMCA Modified win at Lee County Speedway

When original pole-sitter Kyle Hill elected to start at the tail, Brandon Savage inherited a front row starting spot, then led all 20 laps on his way to victory in the IMCA Modified feature at Lee County Speedway.

Savage took charge in a big way at the drop of the green and extended his advantage to a full straightaway in just five laps while Josh Foster was racing through traffic from a fifth row start. On the sixth circuit, Foster worked past Ryan Cook for second in turn two, then went to work on chasing down the race leader.

Foster was already cutting into Savage's big lead, then had those efforts assisted when the leader encountered lapped traffic midway through the event. Foster made up a lot of ground when Savage came upon a pair of lapped cars running side-by-side with just six laps remaining. Foster cut the lead to under half of a straightaway, but his run came to an end when he dropped a drive shaft in turn two in lap 15.

On the ensuing restart, Savage again took command and pulled away from traffic while Cook battled Jeff Waterman for second. As that pair battled, Savage again stretched out his lead in dominating fashion, taking the checkers by a full straightaway in his first win of the season. Despite driving on a left front flat over the final five laps, Cook ran second ahead of Waterman. Michael Browning and Tyler Cale completed the top five.

In the 15-lap IMCA Stock Car feature, pole-sitter Cale Samberg held the early lead. Samberg paced the field while Matt Greiner made a run to the front, taking over at the approximate midway point.

Greiner extended his advantage to a few car-lengths while Jeff Mueller and Jason Cook challenged Samberg for the runner-up spot. Although that trio of drivers put on a good battle for position, Greiner took home the win, his second of the season and the first to repeat in the division. Mueller beat Samberg to the line for second, while Cook and Jim Lynch rounded out the top five in the caution-free event.

Vance Wilson led all 15 laps to take his first win of the season in the IMCA SportMod division. Wilson set sail st the drop of the green from his pole position start, leaving his pursuers to do battle behind him.

Tony Dunker made a nice run through the field from a fifth row starting spot and was sitting in the second row for a restart on lap six. He quickly worked into second place when racing resumed, but was unable to challenge Wilson for the win. Dunker came home second ahead of Brandon Ruffcorn, Kevin Cale and Levi Smith.

Following a pair of cautions during the first two laps, Jake Wenig made his way to the front of the 15-lap Hobby Stock feature. Wening, who started in row two, quickly worked past leader Luke McLaughlin to take command. He led the remainder of the event to score the win, his first of the season. McLaughlin held off Dan Wenig for second. Dane Fenton ran fourth ahead of Victor Hastings, who recovered from an early tire change to finish fifth.

Chuck Fullenkamp earned his third win of the season in the IMCA Sport Compact division. Fullenkamp worked past the low side of C.J. Loring to take the lead on lap four, then drove away from the pack to take the victory. Brandon Lambert crossed the line in second, a straightaway behind Fullenkamp. William Michel, Nick Wilkerson and Darin Smith completed the top five.

Next Friday is $5 night at Donnellson. Everyone gets into the grandstands for $5 and kids 10 and under will be admitted free. If you haven't already paid a visit to Lee County Speedway this season, next Friday will be a great night to do it!

Tomorrow, it's back to Independence Motor Speedway for Relay for Life Pink Night at the races. For our cancer awareness program, we're inviting everyone to wear pink to the track on Saturday. Along with a balloon lift, a number of drivers will also be passing their helmets in the grandstands during intermission to collect money to fight cancer.

And don't lack any confidence about wearing pink to the races. I have my pink shirt, pants and shoes all ready to go for the cause. It promises to be a great night! If you're a regular at Indee, don't forget starting times are pushed back 30 minutes. Gates will still open at 4 p.m., but hot laps will be at 6 with racing to follow. Join us for a night of great racing while also supporting a great cause! I hope to see everyone there!
