Gustin tops field of 41 IMCA Modifieds in Hogan Memorial

What is believed to have been a track record, 127 cars filled the pits Sunday night at Benton County Speedway for the 18th annual Hogan Memorial. The yearly event honors the memory Dick and Janet Hogan, the parents of IMCA Modified driver Scott Hogan, who were longtime community members and supporters of local auto racing. The event began in 1995 after Dick passed away while attending the races at Independence Motor Speedway.

The yearly draw/redraw event for the IMCA Modifieds brings in the region's top drivers for a unique 40-lap feature that not only includes a mandatory five minute pit stop on the front stretch at the halfway point, but also includes a tremendous amount of bonus money. The bonuses, which are also offered to other divisions in competition during the special event, are outlined after a recap of Sunday night's action.

Forty-one Modified drivers signed in to try their chance at history Sunday night, along with the opportunity to earn a little extra cash through heat race qualifying. One hundred dollars was awarded to each of the six heat winners, courtesy of race sponsors, which are included in the results located below.

After 24 entries filled the first 12 rows of the 40-lapper, the top two in weekly track points and a past champion provisional tagged the tail of the starting lineup.

Pole-sitter Dan Chapman paced the field at the drop of the green. His attempts to extend his lead were thwarted by three caution periods that slowed the first five laps. During that time, Richie Gustin, who drew #8 on the redraw, worked the high side to the front. Just prior to the final lap five stoppage, Gustin raced his way past Kyle Krampe for second.

When racing resumed, Gustin continued his run on the top side, reeling in Chapman and making the pass for the lead exiting turn four on lap seven. Although he was unable to pull away, Gustin continued to show the way with Chapman and Jerry Luloff in pursuit. They remained in that order until the mandatory lap 20 pit stop.

Lap 20 Running Order (starting spots):
1. (10) 19G Richie Gustin

When racing resumed, Gustin went back to the top side while Chapman followed and Luloff charged in the low groove. Luloff reeled in the leader at numerous times and was able to take the lead briefly at the stripe on lap 28. Gustin, however, regained the point, then drove the high side to victory, leading 33 times around the fast quarter-mile in the process. Chapman ran the high side past Luloff to take second at the line a short distance behind Gustin.

Complete results, including hometowns, along with all-time Hogan Memorial statistics, follow below a recap of other action. Points races were held in the other four regular divisions on-hand Sunday night.

In the IMCA Stock Car 15-lapper, front row starter Andy Bryant led the field to green while John Emerson drove to the front from a third row starting spot. Emerson slipped past Bryant on lap three, then held off Bryant and Norman Chesmore to take the win.

Emerson capped off a very successful weekend by earning clean sweeps of his heats and features both Saturday night in Independence and Sunday in Vinton. He became just the 16th driver in history to sweep feature wins during the same weekend at both tracks. It was his first career win on the Vinton oval, making him the 30th Stock Car driver all-time to visit the winner's circle at the speedway. It was just under a year ago when the Stock Cars saw their most recent first-time winner. Andrew Burke was the last first-timer on July 31, 2011.

Although Tyler Droste's first appearance in Vinton led him to a sixth row starting spot in the IMCA SportMod feature, that position didn't look too bad after a trio of early cautions moved him closer to the front. In fact, Droste was all the way to second after just one lap, then took over the top spot one lap later to cruise to his first-ever win at the speedway. With the win, Droste became the speedway's 40th all-time different winner in the division.

Points leader Scott Pippert raced from a fourth row starting spot to top a field of 23 IMCA Hobby Stocks in that division's 15-lap feature. Pippert made his way around Doug Laughridge just past the midway point to cruise to the win, his sixth in weekly racing in Vinton this season. For his career, Pippert now owns 41 Hobby Stock wins in weekly racing history at the speedway, seven shy of the mark currently held by Vince Buchholz.

Steve Miedke took command on the second circuit, then led the remainder of the 12-lap IMCA Sport Compact feature to earn his third victory of the season. All-time, Miedke's eight career wins in Vinton tie him with Brad Chandler for fourth on the all-time list. He has a few more trips to victory lane to go to catch Jena Barthelmes, who ranks third on that list with 13 wins.

As always, it was an incredible night in Vinton for the Hogan Memorial. For those of you who are casual race fans and aren't familiar with the Hogan family, the amount of work they put into this event is unbelievable. From organizing lap and position sponsors, to setting up the ride-along in Derek St. Clair's two-seater Stock Car (which was enjoyed by SportMod driver Dave Schulze's wife, Becky, on Sunday night), to the endless amount of contact they make with people just to get the event rolling, my hat is off to them. Thanks to Scott, Jolyne and Drew Hogan, along with Scott's sister Terri Shafer, her husband John and their families for making this event a must-see year in and year out.

Just to let you know how many individuals and businesses want to be a part of the event, listed below is every sponsor (as far as I know) who helped make Sunday night happen. Where applicable, winners' names are included.

Again, some names listed above sponsored multiple positions.

I have no idea how much money went into support of tonight's show, but it's a truly humbling experience to see so many people come together to make the Hogan Memorial the event it has become. What I do know is that Richie Gustin left the Benton County Fairgrounds with some extra coin in his pocket. Along with the $1,250 winner's share, Gustin pocketed the $250 halfway bonus, along with $1,650 in lap money for the 33 laps he led. When the math was done, Gustin earned $3,150 for his efforts Sunday night. Congrats to Gustin for the win and thanks again to everyone who made this year's Hogan Memorial the best yet.

Immediately below are complete results from all five divisions. Below the results is a look at the all-time stats from the Hogan Memorial, including all-time numbers for every Modified driver who signed in for this year's event.

HOGAN MEMORIAL, BY THE NUMBERS
Entering the 2012 Hogan Memorial, 109 drivers had qualified for the feature in at least one of the prior 17 events. Of Sunday's 27 qualifiers, 18 had been there before and nine made their first-ever starts in the feature. Below is a statistical breakdown of each driver's history in the Hogan Memorial. The drivers are listed in their finishing order from Sunday night. In parentheses next to each driver's name is the number of times they have qualified for the feature:

1. Richie Gustin (3) - Gustin's three qualifying runs have come in each of the last three years. Prior to his win in 2012, he earned 15th and 9th place finishes. Gustin became the 14th different winner in event history.
2. Dan Chapman (4) - Chapman has now qualified for the last four Hogan Memorial features. Prior to Sunday night's second place run, Chapman's best finish was 11th in 2009, his first time in the feature.
3. Jerry Luloff (10) - Luloff has qualified for the last eight events. The 2011 winner has finished in the top five in nine of his 10 feature runs. With his third place finish on Sunday, he joined Scott Hogan as the only two drivers in event history to have finished in each of the top five spots at least once.
4. Joe Docekal (3) - Docekal's three qualifying runs have come in the last three years. Prior to his third place finish Sunday, his best finish was 11th in 2010.
5. Cayden Carter (1) - Carter heads the list of nine first-time qualifiers in this year's event. The top finishing first-time qualifier this year, only 12 other drivers in event history have finished better in their first qualifying run. When you consider the top four from 1995's inaugural event are automatically included on that list, it's a pretty impressive accomplishment.
6. Mike Burbridge (2) - Burbridge has qualified for the last two events, finishing fifth in 2011.
7. Jeff Waterman (2) - Like Burbridge, Waterman has qualified for the last two events. He finished fourth in 2011.
8. Kyle Krampe (1)
9. Ed Thomas (15) - Thomas is what you'd consider the Iron Man of this event. Since its inception in 1995, nobody has qualified for more Hogan Memorials. In fact, nobody has qualified for as many as Thomas. He is the only driver to make the show 15 separate seasons. Add to that, his 15 features have all come in the last 15 years.
10. Zach Rawlins (1)
11. Jerry Dedrick (2) - A qualifier for the second straight year, Dedrick finished 15th in 2011.
12. Bill Roberts Jr. (1)
13. Tim Murty (6) - This year was Murty's first in the A main since 2010 when he finished second to Scott Hogan. Murty also qualified in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2008.
14. Timm Jensen (12) - Jensen and Scott Hogan were the only drivers from the inaugural event in 1995 to qualify in 2012. The 1996 and 2002 winner, Jensen and Hogan are the only multi-time winners of the event. Jensen also has three runner-up finishes to his credit in event history. Sunday night marked his second straight appearance in the feature.
15. Kevin Goben (1)
16. David Brown (1)
17. Corey Dripps (5) - Dripps qualified for the main event for the first time since a 24th place finish in 2008. The 1997 winner also made the show in 1996 and 1999.
18. Ronn Lauritzen (3) - Lauritzen made the show for the second straight year and for the third time in the last five years. His best run came in 2008 when he finished fifth.
19. Tony Olson (5) - Olson has qualified for the last five events, his best appearance coming in 2011 when he finished 12th.
20. Scott Hogan (13) - Hogan has qualified for 13 events all-time, tying him for second with Patrick Flannagan, and nine straight. Entering the 2012 edition, Hogan's worst finish was eighth. Despite his 20th place run on Sunday, his average finish is 4.46 in those 13 events. The all-time leader in event wins, Hogan was the champion in 1995, 2005, 2006 and 2010.
21. Mike Van Genderen (2) - Van Genderen has qualified for two straight features. He finished 10th in 2011.
22. Mitch Morris (1)
23. Patrick Flannagan (13) - Like Hogan, Flannagan has made 13 feature events. Like Thomas, Flannagan's have all come in consecutive years. Making every show since 2000, his best finish was fourth in 2006.
24. J.D. Auringer (8) - Auringer's eight feature bids have come in the last 10 years, including each of the last four. He missed only the 2004 and 2008 shows in that span. He earned three straight top-10 finishes from 2005 to 2007, including the feature win in 2007.
25. Jacob Murray (2) - Murray also qualified in 2009 when he finished sixth.
26. Kyle Brown (1)
27. Jake Bowman (1)

The drivers who did not qualify this year are listed below with the years they qualified, if applicable:

That's a wrap on the 2012 Hogan Memorial. If you haven't been there before, be sure to reserve the date when the 2013 schedule is released. You may also want to make sure you reserve that Monday as a vacation day at work as it is a full night of racing that gets bigger and better every year.

Check out Jeff Broeg's column at Positively Racing, as well. He was in attendance on Sunday night and will share his thoughts on the Back Stretch.

Tentatively, I'm planning on heading to West Liberty Raceway on Tuesday for the Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models event. Then, on Wednesday, the Lee County Fair gets underway with an appearance by the MOWA Sprints. It's the first time for the 410s on the Donnellson oval so make plans to attend. Have a great week!
