Eighteen MOWA Sprints signed in to do battle Wednesday night at Lee County Speedway. The first appearance of the 410 Sprints in nearly 10 years opened the 2012 edition of the Lee County Fair.
After their respective first and second place Fast Dash finishes, Ben Wagoner and Terry McCarl started on the front row of the 25-lap headliner. McCarl chased Wagoner over the first three circuits before the yellow flag slowed action for Matt Krieger's broken down ride on lap three.
When racing resumed, McCarl dropped to the low side of Wagoner in turn two and escaped with the lead by the completion of lap four. By the time the field completed just two more laps, McCarl built his lead to a full straightaway. Then, the caution flag waved again on lap seven.
On the restart, Jim Moughan made his way past Wagoner for second as McCarl continued to set the pace. Moughan closed the gap before caution slowed action again on lap nine. After the green flag returned, McCarl extended his advantage to just under a straightaway margin with 10 laps to go before reaching slower traffic on lap 11.
The lapped cars did not impede McCarl's progress as he maintained a straightaway lead when the flying green waved, with five lapped cars providing insurance between himself and the second-running Moughan. McCarl went on to take the checkers ahead of Moughan, a hard-charging A.J. Bruns, and Wagoner.
Stock Cars and 4-Cylinders were also on-hand, however they were not running for track or IMCA points. Jason Cook took the win in the Stock Car 15-lapper while Rob Hammel topped the 12-lap 4-Cylinder feature.
The six heat race qualifiers in each of those divisions were lined up by a Frisbee toss on the front stretch. The drivers with the longest tosses started on the pole of each event, with the short throwers lined up in the sixth starting spot.
John Oliver Jr. led the Stock Car main to green with Chris Webb to his outside in the 12-car field. Second row starter Cook quickly made his way past the front row starters while Jeff Mueller worked from the sixth starting spot.
Cook took command by the time the field completed the first lap while Mueller worked the low side into second a few laps later. Cook maintained the point for the entire distance to score the win ahead of Mueller and Oliver. Jim Redmann and Corey Strothman completed the top five.
Hammel started the 4-Cylinder feature on the pole and led that event in its entirety to take the win. Chuck Fullenkamp, who started outside of row two, quickly made his way into second, however he ran in that spot the entire way to come home second ahead of Darin Smith. Nick Wilkerson and Austin Becerra completed the top five in the 17-car field.
After a night away from the track on Thursday, my plan is to head to Marshalltown Speedway on Friday to fill in for the scoring crew. Then, on Saturday, it's back to Independence Motor Speedway on Saturday for Independence Area Chamber of Commerce Night at the Races. A number of representatives from local businesses plan to be on-hand Saturday to show their support of the speedway. Special giveaways are also planned for the evening.
Regardless where you plan to be this weekend, make sure to take the time to support a dirt track in your area. Have a great weekend!
