Carter's late surge leads to Hogan Memorial win at Benton County Speedway

It's only fitting that a track's biggest race of the year comes down to a difference of just a few feet when the checkers wave. That was the case Sunday night at Benton County Speedway for the 19th annual Hogan Memorial.

Until a lap 37 restart, it appeared Richie Gustin was on his way to his second straight win in the event, which honors the late Dick and Janet Hogan. Cayden Carter proved otherwise as he worked the top side to a thrilling win in the 40-lapper for IMCA Modifieds. (complete results follow)

Pole-sitter Jerry Dedrick led the way the first eight times around the fast, smooth quarter-mile oval. He paced the field while Tyler Droste pursued from his outside front row starting spot and Richie Gustin raced the low line to the front from a fourth row start.

Droste worked past Dedrick for the lead on the eighth circuit as Gustin closed in on the leaders. Gustin entered a three-wide battle for the lead and escaped with the top spot on lap 11. He quickly pulled away from the field running the bottom groove.

Meanwhile, Carter, who started inside of row two, slipped out of the top five before re-emerging on lap 13. He ran the top groove into fourth and remained there behind Kyle Strickler until a mandatory caution on lap 20. Drivers were allowed to make changes to their cars on the front stretch during the five-lap break before the final half of the event was completed.

When the race resumed, Gustin again held serve on the bottom side while Carter made his way around the outside of Strickler. Carter and Droste engaged in a terrific side-by-side battle for a number of laps until caution slowed action again on lap 32. Gustin, who had built a straightaway lead, saw that disappear for the ensuing restart.

Carter made his way around Droste on the restart and settled into second before the final stoppage on lap 37. When the green flag waved a final time, Carter pulled to the outside of Gustin and the leaders ran side-by-side over the final circuits. Carter pulled ahead at the white flag, only see see Gustin power back to his inside over the final lap. Carter inched ahead at the line to take the win by a few feet over Gustin.

It was Carter's first career Hogan Memorial win, making him the 15th different winner in the event's 19 year history. He became the seventh different winner in as many years.

With four new qualifiers in this year's Hogan Memorial, 122 drivers all-time have taken the green flag in the event's feature.

For his win, Carter earned a $1,250 winner's share, plus an additional $100 in bonus lap money. In addition to his second place purse money, Gustin pocketed $1,400 in lap money, plus an additional $250 for being the leader on lap 20. Dedrick took home an additional $400 for leading eight laps and Droste added $100 in lap money to his winnings.

Weekly points racing was held in each of the other four divisions on the schedule.

Danny Dvorak drove to the win in the IMCA Northern SportMod 15-lapper. Dvorak assumed command from Jim Buhlman following a lap three restart to drive to victory, his fifth of the season and 51st of his career in Vinton.

Also the winner last week, Dvorak now has nine career streaks of at least two consecutive wins in Vinton. His 10th career SportMod win in July, Dvorak now owns double-digit victories in three separate calendar months (May, June, July).

It was Dvorak's fourth career SportMod win during the Hogan Memorial. He is now tied with Scott Hogan (Modified), Dan Trimble (Stock Car) and Justin Temeyer (Stock Car) as the only drivers with four Hogan Memorial wins in a division. When adding his two Hogan Memorial Hobby Stock wins, Dvorak's six event victories are the most all-time.

Damon Murty worked past Scott Pippert to assume the lead on the sixth of 15 laps in the IMCA Stock Car feature. After Pippert took the lead back one lap later, Murty regained the lead for good on the eighth circuit. He then held off pressure from Pippert and Norman Chesmore to drive to his fourth win of the year.

Murty now has 59 Stock Car wins in weekly racing history in Vinton, the most all-time. He has also won at least four features in each of the last nine seasons. It was Murty's ninth career win during the month of July. Also the Hogan Memorial Stock Car winner in 2006 and 2010, Murty now owns three wins during the event.

Kyle Parizek led all 15 laps to take his second win of the season and his first-ever during the Hogan Memorial. Parizek became the 13th different Hobby Stock winner in event history. With seven career wins to his credit in Vinton, Parizek now ranks tied for 16th on the all-time list with Brad Anders and Steve Kesl.

After Travis Losenicky and Merv Chandler spent time out front of the IMCA Sport Compact 12-lapper, Bill Whalen Jr. took over the lead on lap seven to drive to his second straight win and his fourth of the season. His four wins mark a career high for Whalen on the Vinton quarter-mile.

The back-to-back wins in Vinton are a first for Whalen, whose 11 career wins in Vinton tie him with Brad Chandler for fourth on the all-time list. His first Hogan Memorial victory, Whalen became the seventh driver in the division to win in the event.

I am simply amazed at how much bigger and better the Hogan Memorial has become each year. The amount of work the Hogan family puts into this event is immeasurable - and every penny that is donated to the cause is put right back into the hands of the drivers. The task is monumental and we race fans should greatly appreciate the efforts of the Hogan family.

Track manager Dana Benning and I were joking with Scott Hogan about his responsibilities for the evening. I reminded Scott that his main priority on race day should be to race. He said that's the most stress-free part of the process. Dana mentioned that next year is the 20th anniversary and, although they have already set the bar high, he wondered what the Hogan family do to make it even greater. Although I don't see how it can get any better, I'm sure they will come up with something.

Complete results from the other divisions on Sunday night are located below, however before you read through them, please take the time to read through the list of event sponsors. Not only does putting together such a program take an enormous amount of time and effort from those involved, it also takes the support from friends, family and community to make it all happen.
