Double Stats Blitz! Indee and Vinton numbers through June

Since this week is full of special events and the Independence Day holiday, the Stats Blitzes through the end of June for both Independence Motor Speedway and Benton County Speedway have been condensed into one entry. Have no fear, the same thorough breakdown of the weekly racing through the first half of the season is included. Just consider this your one-stop shop for all things numbers-wise through July. Stats through the first eight points races in Independence will lead things off, followed by the numbers through the first 11 weekly races in Vinton.

For photos from both tracks, be sure to visit track photographer Jim Wittke's site - www.speedwaysouvenir.com.

* 14 Sport Compact feature events have been complete in weekly competition with 5 different winners. On average, a new Sport Compact winner visits victory lane every 2.8 events.
* Overall, in the last 47 seasons, 1,879 features have been completed in the six divisions that currently compete at the speedway.

Qualifying Streaks
* The longest currently active feature qualifying streaks for weekly competition in each division include:

Late Model: Drew Johnson has qualified for 57 consecutive features. His last miss was July 11, 2009.

Modified: Patrick Flannagan has qualified for 54 consecutive features. His last miss was August 8, 2009.

Stock Car: Norman Chesmore has qualified for 110 consecutive features. His last miss was July 9, 2005.

Hobby Stock: Vince Buchholz has qualified for 51 consecutive features. His last miss was August 29, 2009.

Stuff Nobody Should Know…
* Of the 48 feature winners this season, 29 came from inside starting spots and 19 from the outside.
* Every starting position throughout the first six rows has produced at least one feature winner this season
* No feature winner in the Hobby Stock division has come from the first two rows. In fact, seven of eight Hobby Stock winners have come from the fourth and fifth rows.
* 84 different drivers have cracked the top-10 in his division’s points for at least one week this season.
* 14 different drivers have held or shared their division's points lead at some point during the season.
* Tyler Bruening (Late Model) is the only driver to finish in the top three every night through eight weeks.
* No Modified driver has finished in the same top-10 position more than twice this season.
* In each of John Emerson's five Stock Car wins this season, Sean Johnson finished second.
* Tyler Droste (Modified) has finished in each top-5 finishing position exactly one time. Jarod Weepie (Stock Car) is the only other driver at the speedway to have finishes in each of the top-5 finishing spots.
* Benji Irvine (Hobby Stock) and Adam Gates (Sport Compact) are the only drivers to finish in the top-3 in all of their heat races.
* Six feature events have gone flag-to-flag without a single caution. Only four features have seen their first caution prior to the completion of the first lap.
* There has been exactly one lead change in feature racing in the Sport Compact division. Drivers who have taken the lead on lap one have gone on to win in seven of eight events. Feature winners have led for 88 of 90 total laps.
* There were six lead changes in the final 10 laps of the June 22 Stock Car feature
* Five of eight Sport Compact winners have come from inside row two.
* Through eight nights and 120 laps of Hobby Stock feature racing, the feature winners have led only a combined 39 laps of the races they won. The earliest any winner took the lead for good was on opening night when Benji Irvine got to the front on lap six. No other winner has taken the lead in the first half of any of the 15-lap features. The average lap when feature winners have taken the lead is 11.3. That has made for some mighty fine racing in the Hobby Stocks this season. Support class? Get real.

Weather trends...
* Independence has held six straight nights of points racing without a weather-related cancellation. If we are able to race July 6, it will match the 32nd longest stretch of weekly racing in track history. If we can get through July 13, we will match the 20th longest stretch. If we can make it all the way through July without a rainout, we will have seen 10 straight programs without a rainout. That would tie for 11th longest all-time. In short, while other tracks have lost many shows to wet weather this season, we have been very, very fortunate. In fact, in three of the last four weeks, they were calling for 50-plus percent chance of rain and we were still able to get all those shows in.
* Looking ahead, July is the driest month on record at the speedway. The month accounts for only 28 of 178 rainouts of weekly racing programs, dating back to 1967. Two of the July dates scheduled for racing this year (6th and 20th) have never been rained out in Independence. July 13 has been rained out once (1985) and July 27 has been rained out twice (1996 and 2002). Coincidentally, 1996 and 2002 were the last two times July 27 fell on a Saturday. Let's hope that trend falls by the wayside this year.
* Keep in mind, despite it being the driest month at the track, there has been at least one July rainout in each of the last four seasons. Aside from all that, we should consider ourselves fortunate that we've seen racing in eight of 10 scheduled nights through the first half of the season.

And finally...
* In 48 feature events, 13 times the winner took the lead with five laps or fewer remaining. Of those, three times the winner took the lead on the final lap.

BENTON COUNTY SPEEDWAY
Below are the numbers through 11 nights of weekly points racing in Vinton. These numbers do not include the Frostbuster special that was held prior to the April 14 track points opener or the Hawkeye Dirt Tour special in May. None of the information below includes the Late Models, which were part of the last two weekly programs.

Car Count
Division - Average - High - Low
Modified – 15.1 - 18 - 11
Stock Car – 9.5 - 16 - 6
SportMod – 20.8 - 25 - 17
Hobby Stock – 11.5 - 16 - 9
Sport Compact – 8.3 - 11 - 6
TOTAL – 65.3 - 82 - 54

Points
* 167 drivers have earned points this season.
* No driver has led the points of his division after all 11 weeks. J.D. Auringer (Modified) has led the standings every week since week two, John Emerson (Stock Cars) led following week three and every week since night five, Joel Rust (SportMod) led following week four and every week since night six, Chris Luloff led following opening night and every week since night six, and Merv Chandler (Sport Compact) has led the last two weeks.

SportMod (1): Joel Rust;
Hobby Stock (1): Kyle Parizek;
Sport Compact (2): Nathan Chandler, Bill Whalen Jr.

Feature Winners
* There have been 28 different feature winners in 55 feature events this season.
* Current points leaders account for only 9 of the 55 feature wins.
* Entering July, there have been five straight different Modified winners. There were six straight different winners to start the season. The longest streak of different winners in the division? Ten, during the middle of the 2011 season. Well, we're halfway there. For those wondering, the last five Modified winners were Richie Gustin, J.D. Auringer, Kyle Brown, Ronn Lauritzen and Troy Cordes. Keep in mind, the Hogan Memorial in two weeks is not a weekly points race and will not have an impact on the string of weekly winners (assuming we get our sixth straight different winner this coming Sunday).

Stuff Nobody Should Know…
* Of the 55 feature winners, 24 have come from inside starting spots and 31 from the outside.
* Each of the first 11 starting positions have produced at least two feature winners. Those 11 starting spots are the only starting spots to produce a feature winner through 11 weeks.
* The starting position to produce the most feature winners is outside row four (9 times).
* No driver has won from the pole in the Modifieds, Stock Cars or Sport Compacts. Only one pole-sitter has won a SportMod feature, but three times the Hobby Stock winner has started on the pole.
* The deepest any feature winner has started this season is inside sixth row: Tyler Droste (Modified) on May 5 and Austin Kaplan (SportMod) on June 23.
* Joel Rust (SportMod) has finished second three weeks in a row to three different drivers.
* 70 different drivers have cracked the top-10 in his division’s points for at least one week this season.
* 15 different drivers have held or shared their division's points lead at some point during the season (exactly three different drivers in each of the five divisions).
* J.D. Auringer (Modified), John Emerson (Stock Car), Joel Rust (SportMod) and Bill Whalen Jr. (Sport Compact) have remained in the top three in points all year.
* Of 55 feature events, only 11 winners led those races in their entirety. The Modifieds have not produced a wire-to-wire winner yet this season.
* Each of the last 10 SportMod feature winners have come from the fourth, fifth or six rows. The only one who didn't was opening night winner Nick Roberts. He won from the pole. Roberts' four other wins came from ninth, tenth, eighth and ninth. But you can win from anywhere, right, Nick?
* Speaking of Roberts, he has placed in the top-3 in 10 of 11 heat races. That's more than any other driver at the speedway.
* Cars containing no number other than "2" (2, 2ND, 22, 22T) have led 105 of 132 Sport Compact feature laps.
* 15 of the 55 feature events have gone caution-free this season while in eight features the caution flag has flown before the completion of the first lap. The Hobby Stocks are the only division without a caution prior to the completion of the first lap of feature racing.
* Dating back to June 9, the Sport Compacts have run 58 consecutive feature laps without a single caution. That spans three complete features, plus the final 10 laps of the June 9 feature.
* Justin Wacha (Hobby Stock) has finished in every top-10 position at least once this season. That may not sound like that big of a deal, but remember, that's only through 11 nights of racing. The only position in which he's finished more than once is fifth, which he has done two times. He's the only driver at the speedway to have the entire top-10 covered.

And finally...
* In 55 features this season, 15 winners passed for the lead with five laps or fewer remaining. Of those, seven took the lead on the final lap.

That's it for the month of June. I'll be back at the end of July with the latest sets of numbers for both tracks. Thanks for reading and have a great week!
