Rust captures first IMCA Modified win at Benton County Speedway

Joel Rust drove to the first IMCA Modified win of his career Sunday night at Benton County Speedway - and he held off late pressure from a pair of veteran drivers to get the job done. (complete results follow)

Rust, who took the lead from Dennis Betzer on the second of 20 laps, was joined by Joe Docekal at the front of the pack. Docekal pestered Rust before Rust broke free a few laps later.

The sixable lead for Rust disappeared when he bobbled in turn two on the final circuit. This allowed Docekal and J. D. Auringer, who raced from the fifth row, to challenge.

Rust worked the low side of the final set of turns to keep his pursuers at bay on his way to the victory.

With the win, Rust became the 77th different Modified winner in weekly racing history in Vinton. Eighteen of those first-time winners celebrated in August.

Damon Murty continued to shine in the IMCA Stock Car division. Murty worked from the fifth row to score his third win in the last four weeks and his sixth win of the year in Vinton.

Scott Beauregard held the lead for the first lap before Mike Galli raced the low groove to the front on lap two. Scott Pippert worked around Galli three laps later and held the point while Murty was making his way through traffic.

Murty ran the top side past Pippert off turn two with six laps remaining to drive to victory, the 67th of his weekly racing career in Vinton. Murty has won at least six features in three of the last four seasons in Vinton. He has had a total of six seasons of at least six wins at the speedway.

Kyle Olson took the lead early and then survived a couple caution periods in the 15-lap IMCA Northern SportMod feature to drive to his first win of the year.

Olson, who ran the top groove, was challenged on the low side by Danny Dvorak throughout much of the event, while Tony Olson raced the top side into contention.

Following the final caution with two laps to go, Tony Olson raced the high side past Dvorak for runner-up honors, but was unable to reel in his cousin as Kyle Olson raced to victory.

The win was Olson's sixth in weekly racing history in Vinton in the SportMod division and his first since May 13, 2012. Olson's six wins tie him with Kurt Hogan, Nick Roberts and Racer Hulin for sixth on the all-time list.

Olson has now won twice in his career in the month of August in Vinton. His other August win was also his first SportMod win in Vinton, which came just over eight years ago - August 6, 2006.

Kyle Parizek held the lead at the drop of the green in the 15-lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Parizek set the pace while the field chased him around the top side of the quarter-mile oval.

Nathan Ballard kept pace with the leader after a lap four restart, then inherited the point when Parizek was sidelined with a left rear flat with six laps to go. When racing resumed, Ballard held off Brian Happel to drive to his division-leading fifth win of the season.

All-time, Ballard's 11 Hobby Stock victories in Vinton tie him with Jerry Luloff, Scooter Dulin and Steve Meyer for 10th on the wins list.

Adam Gates drove to his second win of the year in the IMCA Sport Compact division. Gates led the eight-lapper in its entirety to take the victory. With three Sport Compact wins in his career in Vinton, Gates finished the night tied with Travis McCombs for 10th on the all-time list.

Buster Pate raced past front row starters Tristan Cordes and Brody Willett by the completion of the first lap and then led all 10 laps on his way to victory in the BCS Micro Mod division. It was Pate's fourth win in weekly points racing this season and his fifth triumph of the year.

Thanks to Travis Brown for his note-taking of the racing action last night. I joked that I left my notebook in the car so Travis took it upon himself to keep me updated in case I missed something on the track.

Today, I'm off to the Iowa State Fair for tonight's Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models event. I imagine I'll also try some type of food or two on a stick. It wouldn't be State Fair if I didn't, right? Have a great week!
